In June 1956 workers from the Cegielski factory in Poznan opened the gates of their workplace at 6am and went out on the streets demanding "bread and freedom". An overall estimated number of tens of thousands of people took part in mass demonstrations which were crushed by the communist police ending in at least 58 deaths. Today the people of Poznan are commemorating the events with celebrations and prayer. A special photo exhibition with a basic historical commentary is on display at the Town Hall.
