Two charred bodies had been found in a burnt-out flat in an apartment block in Kalisz western Poland reports said. Three people died in a fire in a garden shed near Pruszkov west of Warsaw. n Saturday three people died in flames in the loft apartment of a four-level apartment building in Lodz while two others suffered smoke poisoning. The Polish fire brigade believe the fires might have been caused by the use of additional heaters which overloaded the electricity network.

Baltic attempts to thwart energy dependence on Russia have yet to bear any fruit. Lithuania plans to construct a new Ignalina nuclear power plant connect its power grid to the rest of the European Union via Poland and spearhead the effort to dip into Black Sea oil bypassing Russia. Ukraine Lithuania Poland Georgia and Azerbaijan signed an ctober agreement to construct the dessa-Brody-Plock-Gdansk pipeline connecting the countries of the Black Sea with the Baltic Sea region in an effort to curb the region’s dependence on Russian sources of energy. But Lithuania and Poland still haven’t signed an agreement on the construction of a new power bridge connecting the Baltic country with the rest of the EU. The three Baltic states and Poland have not yet signed an agreement on the construction of a new Ignalina plant after the existing one is shut down in 2009 as part of the Lithuania’s agreement with the European Union setting the region up for an electricity shortfall. Latvia is debating whether its new power plant will be operated on coal or gas. Roman Catholic masses have overtaken Church of England services as Britain's most popular form of worship a Christian Research study has found. Immigration from countries like Poland has swelled the number of practising Catholics in the UK. Figures for 2006 show 861800 Catholics attended services every Sunday compared with 852500 Anglican worshippers. The former executive director of Christian Research Peter Brierley said: “Part of the reason for the increase is you have got large numbers of immigrants coming in from Catholic countries especially Poland. “There's been a substantial number of Poles coming in and 85 per cent of them are Catholic so that's going to boost your numbers. The news comes as former Prime Minister Tony Blair announced he has converted to Catholicism.
