The United States says the proposed system is intended to protect Western countries from missiles fired from Iran and would be impotent against Russia. Poland now is asking the U. to strengthen Poland's short- and mid-range air defenses as part of the deal but the United States has so far appeared unwilling. Poland's support of the Iraq and Afghanistan missions also is likely to come up in the meetings. Tusk's government has decided to withdraw Poland's remaining 900 troops from Iraq by the end of ctober.
