“We’re in negotiations to effectively reinforce our security. The Americans have a different evaluation than we do about the effects the missile shield could have on our security” Tusk told reporters at a press conference in Warsaw. “America has a different geographic situation from that of Poland” Tusk said adding that Warsaw will only welcome a US anti-ballistic missile shield on its soil “if there is a guarantee that our security is reinforced. For Washington the missile shield is primarily intended to protect the United States from possible attacks by so-called “rogue states” notably Iran.

He said Agca’s request would come up against several legal hurdles. "To gain Polish citizenship one must have lived in Poland for at least five years" he said. Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II in 1978 and died in 2005. Agca shot the pope in 1981 in St Peter’s Square and nearly killed him. Meeting with him in his prison cell in 1983 Pope John Paul II forgave Agca for the failed assassination attempt. After having spent 19 years in an Italian prison the one-time ultra-nationalist Turkish militant was turned over to Turkish authorities in 2000 to serve time for other crimes.
