"Benjamin Button" leads the scar field with 13 nominations but has just three chances of a SAG award. Quadruple Golden Globe winner "Slumdog Millionaire" the uplifting tale of a Mumbai slum dweller who makes good on a TV game show has two SAG nominations for best ensemble cast and best supporting actor for Dev Patel. David Poland editor of Movie City News thought neither "Button" nor "Slumdog" would win big on Sunday. "I think the likelihood is that SAG won’t go for ‘Slumdog’" Poland said. "People admire ‘Benjamin Button’ but they don’t love it. It is big and the acting is beautiful but it doesn’t hit them emotionally.

“We understand it’s a blow to people in Ireland — we Poles have also suffered high unemployment — but it’s difficult not to be a little bit selfish in this (economic) situation” says Bartosz a 23-year-old Dell employee and IT student waiting for a bus home outside the vast plant after a shift. As he gazes down from a balcony overlooking the factory’s state-of-the-art assembly lines Rafal Branowski communications manager for Dell Poland says it is unclear how many of the 1900 Dell jobs lost in Limerick will come to Poland. The size of five football pitches the giant factory’s three lines employ 1800 people assembling built-to-order laptops using Asian-made components for clients in Europe the Middle East and Africa. “The decision to transfer production from our Irish plant in Limerick here to Lodz and third parties is part of a plan to save three billion dollars” says Branowski.

Recent visits to host cities however reveal the giant task that lies ahead. The jubilation that erupted in Poland and Ukraine after UEFA’s April 2007 decision to award them European football’s showcase event turned to fear last year as false starts on the construction of stadiums roads airports and hotels in both countries fuelled speculation UEFA could dump the eastern Europeans and hand the tournament to a backup host – possibly Italy Germany or Scotland. Those concerns have subsided following a successful meeting with UEFA chief Michel Platini in December. The former French star came out of the session saying he has “full confidence in Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

Dismissed workers occupy factory in Poland

4700 people have been dismissed since Videocon purchased the factory. In documents sent to the Solidarity union in the factory the new owners complained that "salaries were too high". Arvind Bali vice-president of Videocon told the paper "Puls Biznesu" in late 2007 that planned investments in Poland were delayed for two reasons: "We did not get support from the government and we have problems with the union. We expect change in both cases. "What change? Videocon was counting on aid from the new government and knew that the collective work agreement would expire in June 2008. The first mass reduction hit 1000 people (justified by decreased demand for glass screens even though the factory was getting huge orders from Russia and Turkey). Then salaries were lowered by 40 percent for the summer.
