Poland’s higher taxes cut vodka drinking

Poles purchased 21. 1 million liters of alcoholic drinks including vodka in the first quarter of 2009 which is some 30 percent less than in the same period in 2008 the Polish spirits industry organization said Monday. fficials of the industry organization said the considerable drop in the sale of vodka was prompted by the rise of excise taxes by 9 percent as of January coupled with the smaller purchasing power of Poles due to the global economic crisis. The sale of beer dropped 10 percent in Poland in the first quarter this year when compared with the same period last year beer producers said.

In a note to EU farm ministers meeting in Brussels Polandcomplained of increasing disparity between producer andconsumer food prices as well of “supermarket clout” forcingsuppliers to cut their prices reducing farmers’ incomes. “The observed decline in the prices of agriculturalproducts which is not offset by the reduction of productioncosts leads to the deterioration of farmers’ financialsituation” said the note obtained by Reuters. “It should be emphasised that despite a decline in pricesin the agricultural sector the prices paid by consumers arestill high or are not reduced. Many farmers give upagricultural production as it is not sufficiently profitable”it said. Therese Poland research entomologist at the USDA Forest Service?s North Central Research Station in East Lansing Mich. studies the emerald ash borer to determine the best ways to track and contain the insects. ?We?ve been trying to find a pheromone? Poland said. ?But they are very attracted to ash trees so we?ve been keying in on the different odor complexes present in ash leaves and bark. ?Poland?s research team is focused on finding ways to attract the emerald ash borer so it can be trapped and located.
