Poland approves $372 mln Vattenfal deal

Treasury Minister Aleksander Grad said in a radio interviewon Wednesday that the Swedish utility would pay 1. 2 billionzlotys ($372 million) for the stakes. In ctober 2008 Vattenfall bought a 19 percent stake in theinitial public offering of Poland’s sole listed utility EneaENAE. It is seen as a most likelycandidate to buy a controlling stake when it is offered laterthis year. (Reporting by Patryk Wasilewski; Editing by David Cowell).

Jaruzelski: I agonized for months over martial law

In an interview with The Associated Press Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski acknowledged his sins and those of his government in defending communism in the face of strikes and protests that eventually resulted in the fall of his regime. He says many fellow Poles continue to “spit on my name” although he helped the peaceful transition from communist state to free-market democracy starting with semi-free elections nearly 20 years ago on June 4 1989. Jaruzelski remains a deeply divisive figure in Poland after imposing martial law.

Lufthansa reportedly eyes LT Poland downplays

This is not the first time Germany’s flagship carrier has been reported tobe interested in the Polish national carrier. In January 2008 a Polish newspaper had cited Poland’s Deputy TreasuryMinister Zdzislaw Gawlik as saying Lufthansa was interested in buying a majoritystake in LT. The report came as Poland’s government was determined to relaunch thestalled privatisation of state companies including LT. The carrier whichcelebrated its 80th anniversary this year is about 68 percent owned by Poland’streasury. HANDS FULL Lufthansa already has its hands full with other pending mergers andacquisitions.

In Poland’s telling the heroes of the tale were the Polish pope John Paul II and the Solidarity trade union led by Lech Walesa who founded the movement after a shipyard strike in Gdansk in 1980. Their influence the story runs forced the communist regime to concede nearly-free elections in June 1989. Poles voted overwhelmingly for non-communist candidates inspiring other countries to cast off Soviet rule. Many might quibble over the details of that account but few would dispute the Poles’ vital role in freeing Europe from totalitarian rule. Elmar Brok a veteran German member of the European Parliament says events in Poland were “fundamental” in bringing down the Berlin Wall.

Defense minister: Patriot missiles to be stationed in Poland not …

“The declaration on strategic cooperation from August of last year clearly says that the installation of the first battery of Patriot missiles should take place no later than the end of this year. We stick to this date in talks with our American partners” Klich was quoted as saying by the Polish news agency PAP. The minister said the two sides are in talks on a status of foreign soldiers agreement which will enable the stationing of 100to 110 U.
