The 74-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate received the honor from Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz in a ceremony Wednesday at the Royal Castle. In May city councilors decided to “honor the man who is campaigning for freedom and sovereignty for his nation” — values that Poland embraced on shedding communism in 1989. The Buddhist monk enjoys moral authority in much of the world but comes under fire from Beijing for seeking Tibet’s autonomy from China. He lives in exile in India.
